Detective Inspector Leonor Asker appears to be a stone's throw away from a leadership position in Malmo's Serious Crimes Unit. But the administration decides to give her a promotion in the midst of investigating a famous kidnapping case, to become the head of a department they call Lost Souls, a unit for strange cases that resides in the basement of the police station. Despite the insult to Asker, she gets involved in a strange case. Someone places small figures shaped like people in a railway maquette, and it turns out that one of them represents a kidnapping victim. The issue's connection to abandoned spaces brings Asker into contact with Martin Hill, an architecture lecturer with a keen interest in urban exploration. Asker and Hale soon suspect that behind this seemingly simple case lies an extraordinary kind of evil
