The Gospels tell us a story about Jesus Christ who felt hungry after leaving Bethany and then looked at a fig tree from afar with thick leaves on it. He ran to it but found nothing to eat. They told him that it was not the time for figs, but he cursed it, saying, “No one shall eat fruit from you from now on.” So the cursed fig tree withered forever. Apart from the controversy that took place around this story in Christian heritage and the many commentators and those who sought to answer Jesus Christ’s motives for cursing the tree, the time of figs became a term that symbolically and meaningfully indicates our desire that precedes its known time. We blame things that are delayed as if the fault lies with them when they did not ripen while we were longing for them.
