The conquest of Jerusalem, the siege of Acre, the fall of Tripoli, and the echoes of the events in Syria in Baghdad; these and other historical events were faithfully recorded by Arab historians during the two centuries of the Crusades. These accounts of the fighting between Muslims and Christians were translated into several European languages, enabling the Western reader to become acquainted with the “other side” of those holy wars. “Arab Historians of the Crusades” is a book that is both “old” and “modern,” a book about the Crusades written by historians of the time, dressed in the garb and spirit of our time. In this book, Francesco Gabrielli has reformulated the topics of his work in a hypothetical formulation, paralleling, comparing and integrating the materials of various works written by historians about the history of that era, and extracted sections from the works of seventeen Muslim historians.
